Miller Avenue Lectureships – the third morning
We love the Miller Avenue lectureships and were sad to see them draw to a close yesterday. As Dave Cooper, Dave Barnes, and Jim Malone noted, all speakers did an excellent job and it was especially encouraging to know the commitment and excellence exhibited by such a young set of preachers.
D.J. McKnight shared some key things we can learn from the story of Phillip and the Ethiopian eunuch. First, a message about inclusiveness (though not the way the term has been appropriated by the world) for leaders, a message about exclusiveness for teachers, and a message about power for everyone. D.J. noted that we are to be inclusive as we avoid divisions (he talked about race and ethnicity a lot) and how the “Word” was almost always coupled with the word “power” in the Bible.
David Fiddament closed the lectureship with a great message on “The Work of an Evangelist.” Drawing from Paul’s comments to both Timothy and Titus, David explained what we can and should take away with us today. First, he made the point that we must train and discipline ourselves. Next, he made a great set of points about the need to “hold form,” knowing that we play like we practice. Third, David made a set of points about we act. The reason we study so hard it that when it is game time, we will be prepared to talk with others about our faith.
